Earn high adventure merit badges with the Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center. The Arkansas River Valley is a great place to explore outdoor adventure. The river has great class II sections that are ideal for learning about kayaking and whitewater, while the surrounding mountains offer great areas for rock climbing. Professional instructors will provide the knowledge and expertise to help you achieve your badges. We also provide all of the necessary equipment. So come join the Ark Valley’s oldest paddle school for a day of learning and fun!

ACA Certified instructors will assist you with these merit badge requirements in this half day course. At our boathouse you will learn about equipment and boat loading. Then we head to the lake for wet exits and paddle strokes. Finally the scouts will demonstrate their skills by paddling a buoyed course. Combine this with the Whitewater Merit Badge course for a full day of boating fun!
ACA Certified instructors will assist you with these merit badge requirements in this half day course. Start with a classroom discussion about river features and classification. You will also create a float plan for the trip before headed to the river to work on technical skills. Combine this with the Kayak Merit Badge course for a full day of boating fun!
AMGA certified instructors will assist you with these merit badge requirements in this full day course. Start the day in our classroom by learning about equipment and tying knots. Then we head to our favorite crag to practice climbing and belaying technique. End the day with an exciting rappel!

- Complete the BSA swimmer test
- Hold a current certification in First Aid and CPR
- Review and compare the Safety Afloat and the American Whitewater safety and guidelines.

- Read and understand the BSA Whitewater Merit Badge Handbook
Stay Another Day
The Arkansas River Valley is a beautiful place to stay and play. RMOC offers a variety of guided activities that are fun for the whole family. Choose from whitewater rafting, rock climbing, stand-up paddling, mountain biking, or hard shell kayaking. We will extend a 15% discount to all scout family members.
There is plenty of camping areas throughout the valley. Here are a couple of options that you may want to check out. Advanced reservations are required.
Hecla Junction – Riverside camping approximately 2 miles from RMOC. Reserve through Colorado State Parks.
Chalk Lake Campground – Great fishing and mountain views. 16 miles from RMOC. Reserve through San Isabel National Forest.
Collegiate Peaks Campground– Visitors enjoy fishing and exploring local trails. Well-spaced campsites with scenic views of the surrounding mountains. 11 miles west of Buena Vista.
