C’mon In, The Water’s Fine! Arkansas River Valley weather and flows are perfect for rafting all summer long

Long, sun-drenched midsummer days have arrived in the Arkansas Valley, where river flows are following a “normal” spring melt pattern. As July gets underway the Arkansas River’s Spring swell is mellowing to a perfect volume for family adventures.

If you haven’t made your Arkansas River paddling plans yet, now is the time. The Arkansas is unique among western rivers because of the Voluntary Flow Management Program, an agreement between river users and other water stakeholders. This program strives to provide boatable flows in the Arkansas River from July 1- August 15 each year, guaranteeing smiles for miles on your summer river trip.

At the top of many southern Colorado travelers’ lists is a raft trip through Browns Canyon National Monument. This trip, suitable for first-time rafters and kids as young as 6 years, includes views of stunning rock formations and plenty of splashes for all.

This is also the time of year to try a small craft on the river, like an inflatable kayak. Moderate flows offer a respite from hot weather and a great learning environment to navigate the river on your own. RMOC offers guided inflatable kayak (“ducky”) trips in river sections from the mild Salida Town Run (minimum age 6- consider using a tandem boat with an adult!) to bigger, Class 3 whitewater for more adventurous adults and teens (minimum age 14).

While planning a trip to the Salida or Buena Vista area this summer, make sure to check out RMOC’s guided river trips. Rafting Buena Vista | Buena Vista Colorado Rafting
