These courses teach student to recognize and avoid common river hazards and learn rescue techniques.

ACA L4 Swiftwater Rescue Skills Course/Assessment

This course teaches students to recognize and avoid common river hazards as well as being proactive in preventing accidents on the river. Students will learn rescue techniques for paddlers in distress as well as self rescue techniques. Students can expect to learn skills in dealing with swimmers, pins and entrapments. Proper use of throw bags, rescue vests and other rescue gear will also be covered.

Skills assessment is included throughout the course. Assessment certificate available for American Canoe Association members (see americancanoe.org for more information). The course is open to all whitewater enthusiasts.

  • Prerequisite: Basic swimming skills
  • Venue: Arkansas River, section to be determined. Course meets at RMOC.  Camping available on site
  • 2026 Dates: May 2-3, May 16-17, June 13-14, July 11-12, August 1-2
  • Cost: $350

ACA L5 Swiftwater Rescue Skills Course/Assessment

This course is for folks that currently hold a L4 SWR certification.  It can be used as a L4 update or upgrade to L5.  Part of the time will be spent as a refresher to previously learned techniques, while the course will also cover more advanced topics.  Plenty of time for real life scenarios that will prepare you for the upcoming boating season!

  • Prerequisite: Ability to paddle class III rapids.
  • Venue: Arkansas River, section to be determined. Course meets at RMOC.
